South Korea
Two million patients. Most came for skin.
Korea took 2.01 million foreign patients in 2025, up 71.9% in a single year. Almost two thirds of them came for dermatology[S69].
Which is worth knowing before you read the headline as a statement about Korean medicine. The reputation and the capability are both real. They are not the same thing.
The mix
What those numbers contain.
- Foreign patients, 20252.01mup 71.9% in a year[S69]
- Treated in Seoul87.2%of all foreign patients[S69]
- Came for dermatology62.9%cosmetic surgery a further 11.2%[S69]
- Seen at clinic level87.7%rather than at a hospital[S69]
- Spending, 2025₩12.5tnpatients and companions together[S70]
- Since 20097m+cumulative foreign patients[S70]
Nearly nine in ten foreign patients were seen at clinic level. A queue for a laser is not evidence about a transplant programme.
The other Korea
What it is quietly excellent at.
- Measured, not asserted
- A study of 3,463 valve replacements across 39 Korean hospitals put the mean cost at $32,173, with a standard deviation of $7,552 — and 83.2% of it in the device rather than the hospital. Very few countries can show you their own numbers at that resolution.[S71]
- The university hospitals
- Severance was the first JCI-accredited hospital in Korea, opened the country's first carbon ion therapy centre in 2023, and reports passing 40,000 robotic operations.[S72]
- Where the clinics are not
- Complex surgery, oncology and transplant sit inside the big university hospitals. The clinics that generate most of the visitor numbers do not do this work, and do not claim to.[S69]
Indicative prices
What it costs.
Clinic-published starting prices, which is what “from” means and why two clinics rarely agree[S73].
- Rhinoplastyfrom $4,420
- Square jaw reductionfrom $5,240
- Facial contouring, three-setfrom $15,650
- Abdominoplastyfrom $10,200
- Valve replacement (TAVR)$32,173 mean
The last row is the odd one out, and deliberately so. It is a mean across 3,463 patients at 39 hospitals with its spread published alongside it[S71]. Every other figure on this page is one clinic’s opening number.
What to watch
Choosing badly here is easy.
Seoul has thousands of clinics competing for the same visitors, and the marketing is relentless. For anything cosmetic, the difference between clinics is larger than the difference between countries.
For anything complex, go to the university hospitals. That is where the volume, the intensive care and the published outcomes are.
The cosmetic surgery VAT refund for foreign visitors has ended for 2026, so older price comparisons that assumed it are now wrong by that margin.
Source transparency
Where these numbers come from.
This page is our own research, not a guarantee. The patient statistics come from the Korean health ministry and the valve figure from a peer-reviewed study; the clinic prices are one clinic’s published list, marked as such in the reference list.
